The Hammerstein House is located below the village of Dürhagen in Hückeswagen at the Wuppertal Dam. Before the dam was constructed, it was part of the now non-existent village of Hammerstein.
In 1874, the house was built by Hubert Grafer for his large family. Before World War II, the Hammerstein House was home to a kind of workers' pub. During the war, Russian forced laborers were housed at Hammerstein House, who had to work in nearby factories and were also accommodated nearby. From the 1950s to the 1970s, it experienced its heyday as a nationally known and renowned hotel and excursion venue. Among others, Inge Meysel, Antje Weisgerber, Lisa della Casa, Peter Frankenfeld, and Anneliese Rothenberger signed the guest book. Mephisto actor Gustaf Gründgens even moved into the hotel for two years. However, political celebrities also spent time in the hotel, with Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl among the guests. Minister of Economics Ludwig Erhard, Finance Minister Franz Etzel, World Bank President Eugene Black, and Karl Blessing from the Bundesbank even resided together by the Wupper.
