The amphitheater was built by the Romans at the beginning of the 2nd century AD near the town of Colonia Ulpia Traiana. The amphitheater was used to entertain the citizens of the city and the Roman soldiers of nearby Castra Vetera. The city was destroyed by the Franks in 276 AD and never rebuilt. The ruins of the amphitheatre then served as a place for building materials for the local residents, leaving virtually nothing of the building.
