The rampart is located about a kilometer south of the village of Diele in the German municipality of Weener. The fortress was built on a geest ridge, which was flanked on one side by a tributary of the Ems and on the other by a peat swamp. A medieval trading route also ran over the geest ridge, forming an important connection between East Friesland and the Münsterland.
