The old lighthouse of Borkum was built in 1576 as a landmark by the city of Emden on the East Frisian Wadden island of Borkum. At the same time, it served as the church tower of the historic Reformed Church. The new church building was built about 100 meters from the old lighthouse.
Initially, the structure was a landmark. It was not until 1817 that it was equipped with a beacon. For this purpose, a glass dome, which was lit with oil lamps, was installed. Fifty years later, the lighthouse was improved and fitted with a new lens system consisting of Fresnel lenses. In February 1879 a fire broke out in the guards' room, which also spread to the oil supply below. The fire was so intense that the entire inside of the tower was damaged.
