The fortress of Heldrungen is a fortification used until 1712, featuring two moats, four Vauban-style bastions, and five rondelles, located in the Thuringian town of Heldrungen, part of An der Schmücke at the southern edge of the Goldene Aue, southeast of Bad Frankenhausen. The core of the fortress appears as a bastioned castle from 1519, while the surrounding ramparts and bastions date back to 1668. The main gate of the fortress is flanked by two powerful round towers.
The multi-story castle from the Renaissance period traces back to a castle from the 13th century and still displays several architectural elements from the Gothic period in its structure, such as the arrangement of the windows. A Romanesque keep, known as the "Müntzer Tower" due to the farmer leader imprisoned there, is integrated into the south wing of the castle. Over time, the building has been renovated several times, and dilapidated parts were demolished; nevertheless, the castle today presents itself in an exemplary restored condition.
