Augusta Treverorum

Augusta Treverorum was a Roman city on the Moselle, from which today's Trier has emerged.

The timing of the city’s founding is set between the construction of the first Roman bridge in Trier and the late reign of Augustus. In the imperial period, Trier was the main town of the civitas of the Treveri, where several tens of thousands of people lived, and it belonged to the province of Gallia Belgica. Roman Trier gained particular significance in Late Antiquity when, between the late 3rd and the late 4th century, several rulers, including Constantine the Great, used the city as one of the western imperial residences, as evidenced by monumental buildings such as the Imperial Baths and the Constantine Basilica, which still stand today. With a high five-digit population in the year 300, Augusta Treverorum, sometimes referred to as Treveris, was the largest city north of the Alps and thus held the status of a world city.
