It is surrounded to the east by the Elbe and Rothensee connecting canal and to the west by the branch canal Magdeburg. The island has a north-south extent of about 2.5 km with a width at its widest point of only about 0.3 km. The low water lock Magdeburg is located in the Rothensee connecting canal.
In the immediate vicinity are facilities of the Magdeburg port. The island, belonging to the district Gewerbegebiet Nord, is developed with commercial establishments in its southern half. In the northern part of the island, two wind energy plants have also been built by the manufacturer Enercon, who produces electricity directly across the way.
