As early as the Middle Stone Age around 5000–4000 BC, the valley sand island north of Randau was settled. Harvest finds on the "Göbs" from the period around 600 to 800 AD could come from a Slavic settlement around a castle wall.
After its destruction, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa settled the "Elbenauer Werder" with Dutch colonists around 1160. On this large island between the River Elbe and the Old Elbe in the southeast of Magdeburg was the strategically important Randau Castle, which was first mentioned in a document in a settlement of 28 May 1236 between the monastery of Our Lady and Ivan of Dornburg. Thegenardus von Randowe, who was probably one of the first owners of Randau Castle on the Göbs, is named as a witness. It is not clear how long this castle had existed and whether it emerged from the Slavic settlement or the castle wall.
