The Niegripp lock, sometimes also called the New Niegripp lock, is an inland lock that has been connecting the waterways of the canal area east of the Elbe with the river itself since 1938. It is located at kilometre 0.68 of the Niegripper Verbindungskanal federal waterway in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.
After two years of construction, the Niegripp lock was opened to traffic in 1938 at the same time as the Rothensee ship lift. The fall height in the lock varies between 5.20 meters and minus 1.35 meters. The reason is the often strongly fluctuating water level of the Elbe. It was therefore also equipped with lifting doors sealing on both sides, which were given an additional seal made of spring plate. The lock heads are made of reinforced concrete. The chamber walls were built as steel sheet pile walls. These steel sheet piles are anchored laterally in the substrate. The lock includes a pumping station. It is intended to ensure dewatering in the canal between Niegripp and the Zerben lock. The lock is integrated into the Elbe dike and thus ensures flood protection of the lower-lying canal area.
