Schloss Ammerland is located on Lake Starnberg in the district of Ammerland in the municipality of Münsing. The hidden Old Castle dates back to the 16th century. The New Palace with its two onion domes was built in 1683/85 by Caspar Feichtmayr in the style of the Wessobrunn School. In 1990 it was renovated after it had been on the verge of decay. Today it is privately owned.
The first owners of the noble seat, which was elevated to the status of Hofmark in 1596, appear to be the Lerchenfeld, who lived in the Old Castle. From 1681 onwards, Ammerland belonged successively to three ecclesiastical princes from the House of Wittelsbach: The builder of the New Palace was Albrecht Sigmund, Bishop of Freising and Regensburg. He was followed by Joseph Clemens, Archbishop of Cologne and Bishop of Regensburg, Freising, Hildesheim and Liège, and Johann Theodor, Cardinal and Bishop of Regensburg, Freising and Liège. After the latter's death, the Hofmark reverted to the ruling house, which in 1770 granted it to Foreign Minister Johann Joseph Graf von Baumgarten and his heirs as a male fief. In 1815 the jurisdiction was abolished and Ammerland was declared the free property of the then fief holder Karl Graf von Baumgarten.
