The Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium is located in the centre of the Westphalian city of Münster and is currently attended by 1139 pupils.
The school was founded in 1690 by a Fräulein de la Zweige. At that time, it was the first girls' school in the city. Although the first girls' school in Westphalia was founded in Paderborn in 1658 by the French choristers of St. Michael's, this was a school run by the Catholic Church. In contrast, the Demoisellen-Schule, as the Gymnasium was called at the time of its founding, was the first secular, privately financed girls' school in the whole of Westphalia.
