The Stendal City Library is a public institution of the city of Stendal, which is housed in the refectory at the Mönchskirchhof. The city library looks back on a history of over 600 years, even if it only became accessible to broad sections of the population with the Enlightenment. The official founding date as a public library is 16 December 1935, and since 1984 it has also been called the Anna Seghers Library. The holdings currently comprise 65,500 media units, with 208,000 loans per year.
The oldest book collection in the city of Stendal dates back to 1540, when the St. Nicolai Cathedral Library was founded. However, as early as 1486 to 1488, with the founding of Joachim Westfal's first book printing shop in Brüderstraße, interest in the new medium was recognizable and verifiable. In 1662, another library was added with the family foundation of the former mayor Bartholomäus Schönbeck, the so-called Schönbeck Foundation. Just a few years later, this collection comprised over 1200 titles.
