This station is a so-called ‘hochbahnhof’, which means that the tracks and platforms are on an elevated level. The station was built in 1902 on the first U-bahn line. In 1926, it was named Görlitzer Bahnhof after the train station of the same name located a kilometer away. Due to its special construction of iron and glass, the station is under monument protection.
In the 1980s, the Görlitzer Bahnhof was a well-known station. Anyone who stepped out of the U-bahn could not miss the crowd of punkers sitting on the stairs of the station begging for change. From the station to far along the nearby Oranienstrasse, the street scene was dominated by torn clothes, mohawks in all colors of the rainbow, cans of beer, and requests for 'groschen' (small change). After the fall of the wall, much of the scene moved to various eastern parts of the city. A concentration like there was at the Görlitzer Bahnhof can no longer be found anywhere.
