The Graben has its origin as an open body of water east of the Nietleben district of the city of Halle. It is about 3 kilometres long, flows almost entirely in an easterly direction along the northern edge of the Neustadt district, crosses under the Gimritzer Damm road and flows into a Saale tributary in the city area.
The Saugraben does not carry water all year round. In the summer months, it falls completely dry for longer periods of time. The artificial dewatering of the Bruchsee and, since 2014, the Heidesee, as well as two overflows to the north of the so-called vineyard meadows of ponds drain into the Saugraben. A one-year renovation of the ditch was completed in 2007.
