Main Cemetery Ibbenbüren

The Ibbenbüren Main Cemetery is one of the two large cemeteries in the borough of Ibbenbüren. The cemetery is located in the east of Ibbenbüren's city centre on Ledder Straße and Dörnebrink. With its 7.7 hectares, it is the largest cemetery in Ibbenbüren in terms of area.
Due to the shortage of graves in the 1970s, the decision was made to create a new main cemetery in the east of the city. The cemetery was established in 1975/76 and had to be expanded in 1978/79. The suitability of the soil for burial purposes was pronounced by the Geological State Office of North Rhine-Westphalia in an expert opinion. Permission for the construction of the cemetery with an originally planned total size of 11.5 hectares was granted by the district director of the then district of Tecklenburg on 31 May 1974. "Since the current Central Cemetery in the area of Nordstraße/Bockradener Straße and the Catholic Cemetery Laggenbeck have only low reception capacities and there is no room for expansion, a new main cemetery for the city centre with the eastern part of the city has been created on the site suitable for burials northeast of Wickingweg/Ledder Straße in accordance with the cemetery master plan."
