The castle of Rotenburg was built by Landgrave Ludwig II of Hesse-Nassau in 1470. It stands on the Fulda River in the North Hesse town of Rotenburg an der Fulda.
In 1470, the first fortified castle was constructed directly on the left bank of the Fulda by Ludwig II. A large town fire in the old town already destroyed the castle in 1478, prompting the subsequent construction of a stone castle. It later became a popular summer residence for the landgraves and, at times, a residence for the widows of the landgraves.
