Carolinensiel Museum Harbor

The Museum Harbor Carolinensiel is the old Siel harbor of Carolinensiel, which is now used as a berth for old flat-bottomed ships.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Carolinensiel had the second largest East Frisian Siel and trading harbor on the North Sea coast. At the beginning of the 20th century, its economic significance gradually declined. When the offshore Harlesiel harbor was constructed from 1953 to 1956, the partially silted harbor in Carolinensiel was filled in. In the early 1980s, the Siel Harbor Museum was opened, which promoted the redevelopment of the harbor into a museum harbor. In 1986, the expansion of the historical harbor began. For this purpose, 1.8 million Deutsche Mark were spent. The Friedrich lock was equipped again with a drawbridge. On September 9, 1987, the museum harbor was opened, and the first ships were able to call at Carolinensiel again. A special highlight is the Siel Harbor Festival, which takes place annually on the second weekend of August, a gathering of traditional ships. Along the east and west sides of the harbor, many buildings are protected as historical monuments, and the harbor is also recognized as a group monument. Today, the exhibitions of the German Siel Harbor Museum are housed in three of the old buildings.
