The Regional Museum Römervilla is a Roman museum in Grenzach-Wyhlen in the district of Lörrach, centered around an excavated "villa urbana." The villa, located in the district of Grenzach, is considered one of the most significant excavations from the Roman era in the area south of Freiburg im Breisgau.
The first traces of the villa were discovered during water pipeline construction in 1893, including a large column from the entrance area. However, it was not until the demolition of several modern houses in 1983 that the Freiburg branch of the State Office for Monument Preservation, with the support of the Archaeology Working Group of the Local History Association, was able to uncover the southwest corners of the main building along with a neighboring water basin. During the excavations, wall sections over two meters high, marble profiles of doors and windows, and remains of wall paintings featuring life-sized figures depicting a motif from Roman mythology emerged on the site. Further excavations in the vicinity revealed evidence of at least four outbuildings of the manor house, apparently related to the estate’s economy and the accommodations for the servants. The entire estate once encompassed an area of approximately 8,570 m². However, due to existing buildings and roads, large parts of the complex are now covered. Several hundred meters northwest of this villa urbana, remains of another villa were found in 1934, and in 1993 and 2014, parts of a Roman road were uncovered in this area.
