The Förmitztalsperre, the Förmitz reservoir or Förmitz lake is a dam located to the west and within the district of Schwarzenbach an der Saale in the Upper Franconian district of Hof.
The Förmitz is a right tributary of the Saxon Saale, the spring capture is located on the north slope of the mountain peak east of the market community of Sparneck along the Blaupunkt hiking trail Sparneck - Kirchenlamitz. The reservoir is filled with its water. The dam, completed in 1977, is located at the northern foot of the Waldstein ridge in the bowl-shaped valley of the Förmitz. The builder and operator is the Free State of Bavaria. The water reservoir serves to increase the low water levels of the Saxon Saale. Water retained during times of high flow is added to the Saale during times of low flow, ensuring a guaranteed minimum water discharge of about 1 m³/s at all times. To a limited extent, the dam also serves flood protection as well as the generation of electrical energy. The power of the hydropower plant, which was retrofitted in 1991 and consists of a flow turbine with an outflow of 0.8 m³/s and an asynchronous generator, is 148 kW. This generates approximately 350,000 kWh of electricity each year from the water released into the Förmitz or the Saxon Saale. The reservoir serves for local recreation, with opportunities for fishing, swimming, sailing, diving, and surfing. The water area and shores provide a well-accepted resting place for migrating birds. A medieval ring wall structure is located near the dam.
