City pond Kirchenlamitz

The Kirchenlamitz town pond is a 0.9 ha large, artificially created reservoir in the town of Kirchenlamitz in the Wunsiedel district in the Fichtelgebirge. The pond, which is a protected natural monument, is fed by the Lamitz river.
The year of the creation of the Kirchenlamitz town pond was 1504. The Landshut War of Succession, which went down in history as the "Bavarian Unrest," had been brought to the Fichtelgebirge areas, and Margrave Friedrich II ordered appropriate precautionary measures. The residents of Kirchenlamitz had to dig ditches along the town center, which were flooded in case of enemy danger. The flooding of the ditches was done from a pond located slightly elevated at the western end of the village. Thus, the town pond was created through enormous earthworks at the Upper Anger and the channeling of the Lamitz stream. In 1750, the then market town of Kirchenlamitz acquired the fire pond along with the Upper Anger by purchasing it from the margravial estate administration.
