Adolph-Diesterweg-Gymnasium Plauen

The Adolph-Diesterweg-Gymnasium Plauen, also known as Diesterweg-Gymnasium, is a general education gymnasium in Plauen and offers the Abitur on the second educational path as part of the Vogtland-Kolleg. The Diesterweg-Gymnasium is a four-stream gymnasium and offers an artistic, sporting, and natural science profile starting from 8th grade. A special feature of the upper secondary school is the advanced course in art. The school is named after the German educator Adolph Diesterweg.
In 2011, the Diesterweg-Gymnasium celebrated a fest week under the motto "100 Years of Education in Our House" to commemorate the school’s varied history since 1911. Planning for a higher citizens' school at the corner of Diesterweg and Comenius Street began as early as 1908. On May 18, 1909, the building plan was approved by the Plauen city council, and the first installment of 590,000 Marks was allocated for the start of construction. The building was inaugurated on April 22, 1911, as the "Second Higher Citizens' School," which at that time—being an elevated elementary school—did not yet lead to the Abitur. The school building extended over four floors and included 38 classrooms, an art room, a handicraft room, a teachers' lounge, a female teachers' lounge, as well as several resource and library rooms. The first school director was Dr. Ewald Weller, who led a faculty of 29 teachers. After the festive inauguration attended by dignitaries of the city, classes began on April 24, 1911.
