The Ulf Merbold Gymnasium – State Gymnasium Greiz is a state-run general education gymnasium in the East Thuringian town of Greiz. The gymnasium is the largest school in the sponsorship of the Greiz district. Since 2010, the institution has been named after the former graduate and science astronaut Ulf Merbold and is housed in the former building of the Lessing School in Greiz Neustadt.
Gymnasial education in the former capital of the Principality of Reuß older line has its origins in 1735. Until 1802, adolescents were taught in the lyceum up to university entrance qualifications. After the city fire of 1802, the status of the institution was downgraded. Today, the lyceum is home to the city and district library of Greiz. From 1862, there was a desire among the affluent Greiz population for a new higher school. A private school association was founded, which was increasingly unable to compete with the gymnasiums in Gera or Plauen after the principality joined the North German Confederation. In 1869, a gymnasium was first demanded based on the Prussian model, and its establishment was approved in 1872. Classes were temporarily held in the Red House, which is now the Lessing Primary School next to the Ulf Merbold Gymnasium. By 1875, the gymnasium was built on the former grounds of a cemetery of the St. Marien City Church and was inaugurated on April 10, 1875.
