The Mutlanger Heide is a relatively small area in the local territory of the municipality of Mutlangen in eastern Baden-Württemberg. The Mutlanger Heide became known beyond the region as a rocket base, where from 1983 to 1990, due to the NATO Double-Track Decision, nuclear US intermediate-range missiles of the Pershing II type were stationed, which were subordinate to a unit based in Schwäbisch Gmünd that was referred to for a longer time as the 56th Field Artillery Brigade and lastly as the 56th Field Artillery Command.
After World War II, the area became a base for the US Army. When the Soviet Union stationed newly developed nuclear intermediate-range missiles of the SS-20 type from the late 1970s, a heated debate began in the West over whether this would create a superiority of the Soviets in Europe. The nuclear strategy of "Mutual Deterrence" led to NATO also arming in this category of nuclear weapons as part of the Double-Track Decision – the so-called “modernization” of the Western alliance, linked with a negotiation offer to the Soviet Union. Only for the Federal Republic was the deployment of Pershing II type intermediate-range missiles planned, alongside the Cruise Missile cruise missiles in other European NATO states.
