The Luther-Melanchthon-Gymnasium is a grammar school in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany. It is the only school in Germany that has been rebuilt according to the ideas and concept of the Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The planning was carried out by the architects Peter Pelikan and Heinz M. Springmann. The renovation took place from 1997 to 1999; Hundertwasser, who died in 2000, did not see the converted school. In addition to this school, Saxony-Anhalt owns another Hundertwasser building, the Green Citadel of Magdeburg.
Since the merger on 1 August 2006, the Luther-Melanchthon-Gymnasium has consisted of the former Melanchthon Gymnasium, which is located near the centre of the old town, and the former Martin-Luther-Gymnasium, which stands out from the city's new development area with its numerous colours. In the Gymnasium, all grades from grade 5 onwards are taught. The average number of pupils is about 1000. The simple prefabricated building type "Erfurt 2" from the GDR era, which corresponded to the former MLG and the primary school Am Trajuhnschen Bach, became a building with many green spaces, with trees growing out of windows, golden domes and no straight lines. These were strictly frowned upon by the Viennese artist. Together with the outer façade, the interior of the grammar school was also partially renovated and adapted to the style. The individual floors reflect the four elements fire, water, earth, air, as well as a rainbow element, but this idea did not come from Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The grammar school is one of two grammar schools in Lutherstadt.
