The water castle was built in 1517 by Herbord von Dinklage near the Hopener Mühlenbach. During the Thirty Years' War in 1637, the advance castle was burned down by looting soldiers of the Swedish and Hessian armies during the siege of Vechta. The Lords of Dinklage resided at Hopen until 1587. After the von Langen family briefly held the estate, the Lords of Haren resided in the castle until 1793. Hopen came into the possession of the von Galen family through a purchase in 1805 from a Herr von Oeynhausen from Merrelsheim. In 1948, refugees were housed in the manor house, and in 1948, Count Korff, known as Schmiesing-Kerssenbrock, became the owner. Waterburg Hopen served as a youth hostel for a time starting in 1954. Since 1964, it has been back in private use.
