The Haaren, which originates in Northwest Lower Saxony on the Oldenburg-East Frisia Geest, has a length of 23.8 km and a catchment area of 115 km². Of this, 75 km² lies in the district of Ammerland and around 40 km² in the area of the city of Oldenburg. It is the only river of the Ammerland Geest that drains into the left-hand catchment area of the Weser via the Hunte. The entire water system of the Haaren currently appears very little natural and is heavily modified structurally. The Haaren Water Authority, based in Petersfehn, is responsible for the maintenance of the watercourses.
