The Eisenach City Palace is a castle located on the north side of the market square in the city of Eisenach in Thuringia. It was the residence of the Dukes of Saxony-Eisenach and later a residence of the Grand Dukes of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. Today, it houses office spaces for the city administration, the Eisenach City Archive, and since 1931, the Thuringian Museum.
The current city palace owes its existence, according to tradition, to an extraordinary event: When Anna Sophie Charlotte, a born Margravine of Brandenburg-Schwedt, the widow of the last Eisenach Duke Wilhelm Heinrich, was expelled from the land and further humiliating gestures from the “heir” became known, she promptly ordered the residence castle she occupied to be emptied “down to the last nail” – at least according to tradition, not much useful remained in the building upon her departure. Infuriated by this disgrace, Duke Ernst August is said to have ordered the immediate demolition of the residence castle, and this wish was granted without hesitation.
