Description

The villa of Diringshofen, also known as Villa Sigismund or Haus Lehnitzsee, is a grand bourgeois residence in Potsdam, in the district of Neu Fahrland, Am Lehnitzsee 8. The villa is named after its builders, Lieutenant General Max von Diringshofen and his wife Margarete von Diringshofen, née de Haën. They had the house built from 1912 to 1913 on the west shore of the Lehnitzsee as a retirement home. The architect of the three-story building was Ludwig Otte from Berlin-Lichterfelde.
Otte designed the house with consideration for the excellent lake view, which was available from both the terrace on the ground floor and the balcony on the first floor, and particularly from a small rooftop terrace. For the interior spaces, the builders specified the exact replication of two rooms from the previous apartment, as well as the creation of a festive hall connecting to the music room. Corresponding to its larger ground area, this hall also received a higher ceiling than the other living rooms on the ground floor, thus the bedrooms above it were elevated several steps above the rest of the upper floor. As is customary for a grand bourgeois household oriented towards managing the house with staff, the kitchen and other utility rooms were accommodated in the basement. Stylistically, the villa can be classified as reform architecture with neo-baroque and neo-classical influences.
