The Fredeburg boarding school is located in Bad Fredeburg in the Hochsauerland district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and is a so-called column in the strict sense, i.e. that the students attend the local public schools and live in the boarding school and are cared for there.
After the end of the Second World War, today's Fredeburg boarding school was founded in 1947 under the name Pädagogium Mungenas by the first director of the same name and initially also housed a privately run secondary school. In 1967, this secondary school was taken over by the then still independent city of Fredeburg. With the change in management to Walter Kling, the name of the now independent pedagogy changed to Internat Fredeburg. Kling sold the property and boarding school at the end of 1993 to Franz-Josef Kremer, under whose management the boarding school specialized in the care of children with ADD. The number of places was reduced from just under 120 to around 70, and care in residential groups was introduced in addition to normal groups. The concept for dealing with hyperactive children is essentially based on strict structures and a rather conservative educational model with compulsory church attendance, little free going out, dress codes, etc. The compulsory sport of fencing is also used for educational purposes. Among other things, the boarding school educator and author Wolfgang Pelzer regularly publishes writings on the topic of a strongly rule-based education. From October 2006, the sponsoring company "Internat Fredeburg GmbH" was initially under provisional insolvency administration. With the start of the ordinary insolvency proceedings at the beginning of 2007, the insolvency administrator relieved the boarding school director Franz-Josef Kremer of his functions due to financial irregularities.
