Tecklenburg is a town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located in the Teutoburg Forest, in the district of Steinfurt. It has a population of 8,839[2].
The small county of Tecklenburg was founded in the 12th century. It consisted of the Tecklenburger Land; the western foothills of the hills in the Teutoburg Forest. In 1263 the county was annexed by the neighboring county of Bentheim, but until the end of the 19th century there was a count of Tecklenburg.
The town of Tecklenburg was granted city rights in 1388 and has a picturesque medieval centre with many half-timbered houses. The main attractions are the ruins of the castle with open-air theatre. The Legge is also special. In this overhang (gate) the linen produced in the home office was inspected before it could be traded as Tecklenburger linen
There is also the Stadtkirche where the Counts of Tecklenburg are buried. A plaque is attached to the church in memory of the Dutch physician Johannes Wier, for whom a Wiertoren was also erected in Tecklenburg in 1884.
The Hermannsweg runs through the town.
