The Lousberg is a prominent hill in the city of Aachen, just north of the city ring near the Marienturm. It stands 264 meters above sea level.
The Lousberg is an isolated hill that formed during the Tertiary, similar to a mesa. The rocks of the hill were formed during the Upper Cretaceous. The sea level rose, causing sand and limestone-bearing sediments to be deposited, after which the sea retreated. The base of the hill consists of soft Aachen sand and Vaalser Green Sand, while the top is made of hard flint-bearing limestone from the Gulpen Formation, which is more resistant to erosion.
In the Neolithic, the characteristic brown-gray flint from the top of the hill was extracted and processed into popular tools that have been found all the way to the Ruhr area.
