The Einhard Gymnasium Aachen is a municipal secondary school located in the Aachen-Burtscheid district that was opened on May 1, 1886, under the name Kaiser Wilhelm Gymnasium.
At the initiative of the Aachen and Munich Fire Insurance Company, a predecessor of the later AachenMünchener and today’s Generali Deutschland, it was suggested on April 27, 1881, to the then government president Otto von Hoffmann, due to a steadily growing society with increased educational needs, to establish a new joint gymnasium for boys for the youth of the cities of Aachen and Burtscheid, which at that time was still an independent city. Ultimately, this initiative was owed to the founder of the Aachen Fire Insurance Company, David Hansemann, who in 1824 stipulated at the founding of this company that half of the annual profit should be made available for such social projects through its support association, the Aachen Society for the Promotion of Industry. Thus, the management and the board of directors, chaired by the retired district court assessor and legal advisor Robert von Görschen, together with the mayor Carl Eduard Dahmen, the secret commerce council Leopold Scheibler, the commerce council Robert Kesselkaul, as well as the cloth manufacturers Konrad Starz, Emil Lochner, and Franz Carl Freiherr von Nellessen, and others, had given the Royal State Government the commitment for around 300,000 gold marks for the new school project. With this, the necessary plots of land, which were still in Aachen territory at Lothringerstraße at that time, could be purchased and construction ordered. On May 1, 1886, the school was ceremoniously opened under the name "Kaiser Wilhelm Gymnasium" by the first headmaster Councilor Regel. Even in the following years, the subsidies from the insurance company’s fund did not dry up, and thus additional service apartments and a sports area could also be acquired. Students of the gymnasium included the founders of the Aachen football club, the predecessor of Alemannia Aachen.
