The Upper Postal Directorate of Braunschweig was an upper postal directorate established in Braunschweig. It had previously existed as the Ducal Braunschweig Railway and Postal Directorate. With the entry of the Duchy of Braunschweig into the North German Postal District, it became the Upper Postal Directorate of Braunschweig on January 1, 1868. In 1977, the Upper Postal Directorate merged into the OPD Hannover/Braunschweig.
The founding occasion was Article 48 of the new Imperial Constitution: “The postal and telegraphic services will be established and managed as a unified state transportation authority for the entire area of the North German Confederation.” The Prussian administrative system was adopted. The new “Federal Upper Postal Directorate” was now subordinate to the Royal Prussian General Postal Office in Berlin as a middle authority. The management was entrusted to the Braunschweig financial councilor Rudolf Schottelius.
