The Volksbank Helmstedt eG was a cooperative bank based in Helmstedt. The bank's business area covered the city of Helmstedt as well as parts of the surrounding area and Haldensleben.
In 1860, the Helmstedt Bürger-Darlehenskasse was established. It originated from local commercial and agricultural cooperative banks. The goal at the time was to provide the middle class of Helmstedt with small business loans. After transforming into a savings and advance club, a step was taken to establish a credit cooperative that operated according to the principles of Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch: self-help, personal responsibility, and self-administration. The bank also took on the functions of a savings bank for non-members.
