The location is in the "Brunnental" in the midst of the Lappwald about three kilometers east of the core city of Helmstedt.
In 1755, strongly sulfuric and carbonic sources were discovered and made usable here. As a result, a lively spa business developed, leading to the construction of several spa hotels and a spa theater, as well as the creation of a spa park. The forest expert and writer Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Alers ensured the regional significance of the spa business in Bad Helmstedt with the opening of the Clarabad. Presumably, due to the advancing lignite open-pit mining south of Helmstedt, the springs dried up starting in 1894, ending the spa business.
