The Old Customs House Hitzacker is a former customs house built in 1589 in Hitzacker, which is now a museum.
The Old Customs House is the oldest surviving building in Hitzacker. It stands where the Elbe toll has been collected since 1248. Until shortly before 1589, the customs house only comprised the western part of the building. It was not until the new customs house was built in 1589 that Duke Wilhelm of Brunswick-Lüneburg bought the property from the noble Bülow family and enlarged it with the customs house. In 1668, the customs house survived a major fire that engulfed all the neighbouring town houses and the old St. John's Church. At the beginning of the 18th century, an extension was built in Zollstraße – which is still clearly visible today. With the abolition of customs duties as a result of the founding of the German Empire in 1872, the centuries-long function of the house came to an end. The Royal Hydraulic Engineering Office moved in, and in 1958 the Water and Shipping Authority; some of its servants also had their apartments here.
