Old Geeste Bridge

The Old Geeste Bridge is a swing bridge in Bremerhaven-Geestemünde on the Fährstraße. It has been running over the Geeste since 1904.

In 1845, the construction of the harbour began on the southern bank of the Geeste. The newly created harbour town was given the name Geestemünde in 1847. Below today's Geeste Bridge, an old Prahm ferry operated in the 19th century. This could no longer cope with the increasing passenger and wagon traffic. A commission therefore advocated the construction of a bridge. From 1856 to January 8, 1857, the Ministry of the Interior in the Kingdom of Hanover had a two-winged swing bridge built with a clear width of 56 feet. "The bridge had no superstructures and its appearance is very reminiscent of the canal bridge in Geestemünde, which was built around the same time."
