Bederkesaer Roland

The Bederkesaer Roland is a statue of Roland, which is located in front of Bederkesa Castle in Bad Bederkesa, a village in the town of Geestland in the district of Cuxhaven.
The smallest stone Roland has a height of 1.90 meters and stands on a pedestal of 1.45 meters. The statue shows a knight in turquoise armor of the late Renaissance. He wears a visorless, feather-adorned helmet. In his right hand he holds a drawn sword, with his left a shield resting on the ground, which shows the double-headed imperial eagle. It was created from sandstone, possibly by the Bremen sculptor Lüder von Bentheim. On each of the four sides of the pedestal there are miniatures of lions holding four coats of arms in their paws. The coats of arms are those of the city of Bremen as well as those of the Bremen councillors and Bederkesaer Drosten Schütte, Kreffting and Schorhar, who probably had Roland built. The pedestal is more recent and was made of Bremen demolition stones when the Roland was moved in 1953.
