The Rosdorfer Baggersee is a quarry pond south of Göttingen. It was created from an open-cast gravel mine and, together with its shore zones, now serves as a local recreation area. It is known to the population as the "Rosdorfer Baggersee" due to its proximity to the village of Rosdorf, which is a few hundred metres away, but it is located in the municipality of Friedland and belongs to the district of Niedernjesa. The term "gravel lake" is usually avoided for this lake, as this term is already used to refer to the Göttingen gravel lake in the south of the city, which is also close to the border with Rosdorf.
The lake is located about 3 km south of Göttingen and 500 m southeast of Rosdorf. The water surface of the quarry pond is about 15 hectares in size, but is repeatedly expanded to the north in the course of gravel mining. The water depth is up to 43 m. There are no above-ground water inflows and outflows, although the lake was created a few meters east of the Leine. At normal water level, a dam about 20-30 meters wide separates the river from the lake. Since the gravel is permeable to water, the lake and river always have the same water level. The dam can be flooded during heavy flooding, so the lake is located in the flood area of the Leine.
