St. Michael

The Church of St. Michael is a Catholic church in Lebenstedt, a district of Salzgitter in Lower Saxony. It belongs as a branch church to the Lebenstedt parish of St. Joseph, in the Goslar-Salzgitter deanery of the Diocese of Hildesheim. The church, named after the Archangel Michael, is located at Saldersche Straße 1.
At the end of the 1930s, there was a considerable increase in population in Lebenstedt, triggered by the need for manpower at the Reichswerke AG für Erzbergbau und Eisenhütten "Hermann Göring", which was founded in July 1937. A large number of Catholics from various parts of the German Reich and abroad moved into the village, which had been Protestant since the Reformation. At that time, Lebenstedt belonged to the parish of St. Peter, with its seat in Wolfenbüttel, about 17 kilometers away. Pastoral care initially had to be limited to home visits, as there were no church rooms available. According to a decision made by Adolf Hitler in 1939, no churches were allowed to be built in the city under construction, even the designation of church building sites for later church buildings was prohibited.
