Federal Motorway 544

The Federal Motorway 544 – abbreviated as Autobahn 544 – is a motorway in North Rhine-Westphalia. The motorway was planned as early as 1925 in the Weimar Republic and was built as the beginning of the Reichsautobahn Aachen–Cologne. The first section was opened to traffic in 1941 with the section from Eschweiler to Verlautenheide. The extension to Europaplatz, however, was not completed until 1958. After the extension of this motorway towards the Netherlands in the 1970s, it serves as a city motorway for the city center of Aachen.

The A 544 begins at Europaplatz in Aachen and runs for about five kilometers to the Aachen motorway junction, where it merges into the A 4. It is continuously built with four lanes. There is a speed limit of 100 km/h along the entire motorway. The exit Aachen-Rothe Erde can only be accessed in the direction of Europaplatz, with the entrance only in the direction of the Aachen motorway junction.
The Greens are calling for the A 544 to be shortened in favor of a new district between Europaplatz and the exit Aachen-Rothe Erde, although extensive renovation work on this motorway has taken place until 2020. Thus, the guardrails and road surfaces have been renewed with quiet asphalt, and the Haarberg parking lot near the Haarbachtal Bridge has been removed. Furthermore, the Haar Valley Bridge has been renovated.
