The Evangelical Lutheran church Neustädter Marienkirche is the largest church in Bielefeld. The Gothic building church from 1293 is a feature of Bielefeld's cityscape and is located in the Mitte district.
The church was built at the foot of Sparrenberg Castle by modifying and enlarging a pre-existing church, at the suggestion of Count Otto III of Ravensberg, who, in 1292, presented his plan to the bishop of Paderborn. The day of foundation was July 14, 1293. The church had various construction phases and took on its current form in about 1512. The western part with the two façade towers had been completed in 1494. Recognizing the Count of Ravensberg as the founder, the church is also called "Ravensberg Cathedral". Since 1948 it has been the preaching place of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia.
