Description

Haus Pröbsting is a listed building in Hoxfeld, a district of Borken in the district of Borken in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The complex, which was first mentioned around 1221, was originally the provost of Vreden Abbey. The owners belonged to a side line of the noble lords of Gemen. In 1345 Goswin von Gemen received from the Bishop of Münster, Ludwig II. permission to build a stonework on the estate. In return, it was declared an open house for the Bishop of Münster. After Goswin's death, his son was enfeoffed with the estates by the abbess of Vreden. Since the later lords of Gemen gen. Pröbsting were free to dispose of their possessions, the property must later have passed into their own possession. After the extinction of the family in 1559, the house passed into the possession of the Lords of Willich. In 1714 it passed by marriage to Georg Benhard von Keppel zu Öding. From the second half of the 18th century, the changes of ownership followed in rapid succession. Among others, the house passed to the Basse family and the Counts of Landsberg-Velen. In 1879, the writer Ilse von Stach was born at Haus Pröbsting. She processed her memories of her time in Pröbsting in her novel Haus Elderfing. In the 19th century, the main building was enlarged and rebuilt. In more recent times, the building had fallen into disrepair for decades, it was restored to its original state in 1988 and extensively renovated.
