The monastery was founded in November 1234 after the Duisburg citizen Alexander de Cassels secured the economic foundation of the monastery through land grants. Initially, 13 nuns from the Cistercian convent of Saarn settled in the new monastery, and in 1237 the number of nuns was increased to 25. The spiritual oversight was carried out by the Kamp monastery.
