The Wittringen leisure facility, originally called the Wittringen public recreation area, was built in and around the Wittringen Forest in Gladbeck and was inaugurated in 1928. It includes the castle Wittringen, which houses a restaurant and the museum of the city of Gladbeck.
The facility, designed in the style of an English landscape park, was intended to serve as a local recreational area for the rapidly growing population of Gladbeck, which expanded due to coal mining. In 1922, the city purchased a large part of the Wittringen Forest from the noble previous owner. Starting in 1925, the city expanded the area around the city forest and the water castle, with the redesign planned by the head of the civil engineering office, Josef Korte, in the spirit of the public park movement. Ponds, playgrounds, soccer, handball, and hockey fields, the 4.2 km long Ringallee, a community meadow, as well as an open-air and light bath were created. Landscape elements, clear sightlines, and winding paths structured the area. Between the forest and the Graf Moltke coal mine, the sports facilities were built, featuring a large stadium and outdoor swimming pool.
