The Ratsgymnasium is the oldest of Gladbeck's three grammar schools. It has had its current name since 1974, before that it was called "Neusprachliches Gymnasium".
The first school building of the then private rector's school, which was supported by the municipality, was a master carpenter's room, which was approved and furnished on March 16, 1900. In 1903, the company moved into the new school building on Victoria Street, which was state-of-the-art by the standards of the time: it had running water and partly gas lighting. In 1904 the school became public. In 1909 it was converted into a Realschule and in 1914 into a Reformrealgymnasium. The school changed location several times until it moved into its current building in 1915. In 1925 he finally took the step to the old-style Realgymnasium.
