The Evangelical Church of Katernberg is a church building located in the northern district of Katernberg in Essen. The largest evangelical church in Essen is a listed building.
The activities of the Zollverein coal mine in the emerging hard coal mining industry led to a rapid increase in the population due to the immigration of workers. Many workers who immigrated from eastern regions increased the number of evangelical congregants by 1,500 as early as the 1870s. Hugo Haniel, the chairman of the mine board of Zollverein and a Reformed Protestant, introduced an annual subsidy of 1,500 marks to the pastor's salary for ten years, which led to the establishment of an independent church congregation that was approved by the state and church authorities in 1874. Initially, services were held in a school.
