The first Catholic church in Ahaus was founded in the 14th century. This hall church was destroyed by fire in the year 1400. This was followed by the construction of a three-nave church, which was completed with the still existing 68-metre-high tower from the years 1498-1519
A city fire in 1863 also destroyed this Gothic church. The church building was now rebuilt within the preserved outer walls as a three-nave neo-Gothic hall church with a rectangular choir. The brick new building had four bays and was completed in 1865. The sandstone tower was raised with the same building material according to the design of Hilger Hertel. The burnt Baroque crowning of the tower was replaced by a neo-Gothic spire. In 1896 this church building was extended with a third side nave.
