The Holtwicker Egg is a boulder with a mass of approximately 15,000 kg, near the town of Holtwick in the municipality of Rosendahl in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The stone is reminiscent of an egg in terms of shape and protrudes 1.75 meters from the ground. About double of this is in the ground.
Several sagas are told about the Holtwicker Egg. When churches were built in Coesfeld and Bilerbeck, the devil was very angry about this. He wanted to smash the churches with stones. To do this, he selected a large stone and held it on his back. As he walked to the churches, however, the stone grew heavier with each step. Finally, he had to drop the stone. He tried one more time and threw a stone in the direction of the churches. He shouted Holt wiek oder ick smiet!. This means: Take away, or I'll throw! in Low German. This stone did not reach the target, after which the devil gave up. According to legend, this is also where the place name came from.
