The Lower Rhine Bight is a geological subsidence area in western Germany. Its formation began about 30 million years ago. Since then, more than 1000 m of sediment have been deposited in its centre. The geological structure of the Lower Rhine Bight lies between the cities of Aachen, Roermond, Wesel and Bonn and includes the two large natural units of the Lower Rhine Bight and the Lower Rhine Lowlands. Of great economic importance are above all the mighty lignite mined in extensive open-cast mines and the hard coal mining, which has largely come to a standstill today.
